Musicology No. 39, Call for Papers: Scientific Journals as Agents of Science Policies: Insights from Musicological and Ethnomusicological Perspectives

02.07.2025

To mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the journal MuzikologijaMusicology, we are delighted to invite authors to contribute to the Main Theme of Issue No. 39 (II/2025), which is dedicated to critical research on scientific journals and their diverse roles in the formation, reshaping, strengthening, and transformation of science policies in musicology and ethnomusicology, as well as in knowledge production within the broader frameworks of the social sciences and humanities.

We encourage a variety of journal-focused studies relevant to the historical development of both disciplines. Contributions that address contemporary journals as active agents in shaping current musicological and ethnomusicological research are especially welcome.

Authors may offer insights into thematic, methodological, and theoretical aspects, and examine the roles of publishers, editors, and individual authors in establishing the profile and impact of periodical publications across various research areas related to music studies, including emerging subdisciplinary fields. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The influence of journals on framing dominant scientific currents or promoting resistance to disciplinary mainstreams;
  • The impact of journals on shifting centers of disciplinary power and fostering inter- and transdisciplinary, as well as transnational, scientific networks;
  • The role of journals in positioning music sciences in relation to state science policies and/or the global body of disciplinary knowledge;
  • Critical discussions of current issues, including journal rankings and categorization, the impact factor as a measure of quality, multilingual publishing, strategies supporting open-access models beyond commercial publishing, and how these and other dynamics intersect with journal visibility.

We invite authors to explore these topics from a variety of perspectives, including case studies, quantitative analyses, historiographical, comparative or theoretical research, or conceptual frameworks.

Deadline for paper submission: 1 September 2025.
