Musicology No. 38, Call for Papers: Music and Dance of Roma in the Balkans and Its Diaspora

06.11.2024

With a view to increase researchers' interest about Romani music and dance and to provide a scholarly basis for cultural activism among the Roma, we invite authors to present their original research on this topic.

Music and dance of the Roma are still insufficiently known to music researchers in Serbia. Some 20th-century writings situate Romani music exclusively in the domain of performance. With this issue we encourage the analysis of Romani musical creativity, starting from the analysis of performances (including both music and lyrics), introducing the analysis of discography and positioning Romani creativity within the framework of the cultural industry. Music and dance of the Roma in the Balkans are connected historically, and today it is a pan-Balkan phenomenon, but also Western European – both due to the existence of Romani communities in the diaspora which have their own music market, and the establishment of a popular hybrid genre for the non-Romani audience: “Balkan music”.

Authors are also encouraged to present ethnographical narratives and historiographical data, and to use various theoretical approaches to discuss Romani performances and creativity in contexts such as: various musical and dance genres, emotionality and expressiveness, inclusion in the intangible cultural heritage paradigm and the influence of contemporary mobility on music and dance practices.
